Description

Food

The brainchild of esteemed South African chef Luke Dale Roberts, The Shortmarket Club offers an Asian-fusion menu where guests can choose an a la carte or tasting menu experience on the trendy Oxford Parks strip in the heart of Rosebank.

Asian fusion is the order of the day. Expect hints of miso, lime, fresh crunchy vegetables and dashes of spice throughout the menu. Order the prawn-and-pork belly ssam (misoyaki, yuzu dressing and deep-fried onion) or the linefish sashimi (hoisin sambal dressing, toasted coconut and fennel) for an Eastern explosion. End your meal with a classic chocolate fondant (French vanilla ice cream, chocolate caramel crunch, berry compote) or a cheesecake mille-feuille (cocoa nib tuille, burnt butter ganache, cheesecake mousse) and a coffee and you won’t be disappointed.

Drinks

Visitors are offered the option of a la carte or a tasting menu. If a tasting menu is chosen, there is the option of a local wine pairing, a cocktail pairing or an international wine pairing. The local pairing works beautifully with the food and showcases a broad range of wines from a variety of regions. Creative cocktails such as the SMS Sours (Glenlivet 15, vanilla syrup, lemon, bitters) are also top-notch choices. For the connoisseurs, the international wine pairing will fare well if you want to impress your friends with a knowledge of global cultivars.

Service

Service is swift, friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. The team works together well and you can see the chefs buzzing around the open kitchen working on your courses. Expect to pay a deposit for your booking (as can be expected when dining in an establishment run by an award-winning chef – this is to deter no-shows and will be deducted from your bill at the end of your meal.

Ambience

Decor can be described as laid-back chic. You don’t feel the need to don high heels but if you want to dress up you wouldn’t feel out of place either. The living plant wall is lined with leather seating, which complements the herringbone marque flooring and the copper accents. The butterfly artwork was brought to Joburg from the original Shortmarket Club in Cape Town.
