Description
Food
An Ethiopian food journey where the restaurant feels like an extension of Casa (the owner’s) home. It’s a modest setting where the food and your experience are prioritised. Expect delicious, hearty, spicy, home-cooked fare. The menu is small (8 items in total) and offers both meat and vegan-friendly options.
You’ll delight in generous portions of slow cooked stews served atop moreish injera bread. It’s sharing food that you eat with your hands in an atmosphere that will warm your heart. Their signatures are the Beyaynetu and Mahberawi – an array of either vegan or meat and vegetable dishes, each cooked uniquely, with different combinations of Ethiopian spices and served atop a huge injera ‘pancake’ which you tear apart and dive into. It’s an extremely affordable and tantalising dining experience.
Drinks
The restaurant serves Ethiopian coffee, similar to espresso that is prepared in a jebena – the traditional Ethiopian coffee boiling pot. The beans are roasted on site and ground before the coffee is boiled with water in the jebena.
It’s strong, so they recommend you have a little sugar to balance with acidity and bitterness of the beans. They also serve a fragrant spiced tea that’s wonderful in aiding digestion. AND, if you’re looking for something different, try out the ‘spris’, their special spiced tea and coffee blend, that’s like a sweet chai coffee.
Service
Service is rudimentary in this very laid-back setting. You feel extremely cared for by Casa and his team, but don’t expect fine-dining service, rather think of the restaurant as an extension of Casa (the owner’s) home: everything is relaxed, and everyone is welcome.
Ambience
The setup is modest, but there is nice attention paid to art on the walls, soft lighting and trinkets dotted around the restaurant. There’s a great outdoor seating area for summer days and nights.
